First cool use of 3D TV I've seen

Never thought about sports in 3D, never mind tennis!

tennis would be one of the only things i may want to see in 3d, i still think 3d is gimmicky and a joke

I think 3d is about as gimmicky as the use of sound was in its first years in cinema. IMO in 20 years we won't be able to imagine media without it. I'm talking of course without the need for eyewear.

Ain't that the truth, I'll bet you $50,000 that in 20 years, the 3D TV/Cinema industry will be a joke. You in?

Not completely ubiquitous? Maybe. A joke? Possibly, but I really don't think so.

I mean, if the 3DS becomes successful, I think smartphone makers might start incorporating the tech into their devices. If that happens, it could get popular very fast. If they can develop holographic technologies that can display 3D without glasses in non-mobile devices, the content will definitely migrate in that direction.

I think 3D is great in film. For me, it enhances the experience greatly (my favorite example is 'UP'). In gaming, sports, and porn, it will be greatly appreciated and very profitable. I can also see 3D being incorporated into the computing on mobiles and desktops. I don't know if the timeline is 20 years, but I see this as an inevitability in visual media.

I think it could be cool incorporated into things like phones and computers so long as you don't need any glasses to view it.

As far as film goes, I see it more as a novelty than anything else. I've never seen up, the only movies I have seen in 3D I don't feel like them being in 3D added anything to the movie, it was a just a fresh, new thing that would attract crowds. Maybe it will change in the future, but I haven't seen anything that would provide any evidence of it.

3D gaming could be something I dig. 3D is sports as well, but probably just tennis. 3D is porn.. bring it on.

As it is right now, 3D technology is no different or cooler in my opinion then when it came out in the 70's. I have seen some really cool tech avail. that are actual holograms and projectors which can project 3D looking images. As soon as they eliminate the need for glasses then the technology will rule. As it stands right now, I'd have to agree with Jesse that it is kind of gimmicky

Jesse was saying that it is NOT gimmicky. He compared it to the introduction of sound in film.

I agree with dave then about it being gimmicky right now
and I agree with jesse on the point that without the need for 3D glasses it will be really awesome

I think 3D will be glasses-free, and once people are used to seeing the content on a regular basis, content without 3d will feel boring.

I think today the use of 3D is often gimmicky (as sound was upon release), but like 'Up' I can see it being used in really incredible and interesting ways.

I think the sensation of something actually moving at you is far more striking than seeing it on a flat plane.

I have to agree with Jeff and Dave on it being gimmicky. There are films like Up and Toy Story 3 which absolutely did not need 3-d to be good films. In fact, if you watched either of those movies in 2-d you would definitely not be disappointed. However, some movies with crappy stories, like Avatar and Clash of the Titans, definitely relied on 3-d as a gimmick to sell tickets. Watch Avatar in 3d and then watch it in 2d and tell me about I'm wrong. I don't think 3d needs to evolve so much as a return to story-telling is what we really need in today's entertainment industry. I do want to see Piranha 3d, but as a horror film enthusiast and Christopher Lloyd fan, I would have seen it 3d or not. So, 3d is a gimmick now and should not be used as a crutch when clearly the tech isn't fully ready.

I think 3d should evolve with motion capture tech for it to be completely awesome. How badass would it be if you could manipulate screens in front of you with the flick of your wrist or the point of a finger?

Okay I definitely don't think 3D is going to make a bad story into a good one. But it definitely is a tangible tool for a filmmaker to work with to share their vision in a unique way. I have to say that my breath was taken away a bit with some of the beautiful landscapes in up, which was definitely aided by the depth of 3D

Right...that's why I said those aforementioned movies (Avatar and Clash) used 3D as a gimmick to sell tickets, because their story was bad. Avatar definitely made up for a poor story by having stunning visuals, the depth of the first scene had me entranced. However, when I watched the movie again in 2d, it just wasn't the same. I also saw UP in 3D and 2D and can safely say that movie is enjoyable in any format.

The only thing I support 3D in right now is porn. Everything else is gimmicky at the moment.

My point is just that it has great potential to be considered as more than just a novelty, to the point to where people won't like to view content that is not in 3D, such as the way people would generally choose to view films in color vs. black and white (And I'm speaking in popular and industry trends, not necessarily personally).

UP is a just a damn good movie; in 3D, 2D, HD, SD, whateverD, black and white, etc. But the preferred format is the most engrossing one, and some of the brilliant minds at Pixar are betting a lot of money that its 3D.

Therefore, like that article I posted, I think tech companies will start finding ways to make 3D available without glasses. Given the unprecedented push that the industry is giving it at this time, it seems very reasonable (but not certain) to me that in 20 years it will be far beyond the stage of novelty.
