Actually, the more into "Business" I become, the more the word itself feels dynamic and interesting to me. Kind of like " Technology" or "Philosophy"-- a word/topic I recall sounding very boring until around 8th grade when I became more familiar (and eventually fascinated) with it.

the Network is good. my problem with the word "Business" was more that it sounds self-serious, i guess.

love the addition to the smiley panel btw :Happy Matt:

I think this was a fantastic idea.

Also I laugh every time I look at my profile and it says I have no friends...

this struck me as a great point, key word being 'dynamic'.. that's what it means to "get into" something, I guess. when it starts feeling endlessly applicable to human phenomena.

on my newest thing, economics - I loved my "Economics of the Developing World" course in college, and had kept up with lighter econ blogs here and there since, but the tipping point was talking with Jeff (Matt too?) about money last month. it was like a nuclear bomb going off when it hit me, that societies all manifest their abstract conceptions of 'value' as paper and coin and all human development is a result of this ridiculous but brilliant scheme, and people are studying this and calling it "economics." insane.

all it takes is a singular relevatory experience like that and you're carried away into new realms. hands-down my most "productive" use of leisure time is reading non-fiction w/ aid of drugs - the entirety of history and matter feels tethered to the Truth of what it is you're reading.

Beautiful post. On this notion, I move to rename the network to Business.

buuuut... that wasn't actually how Jesse was suggesting we use the "Business" forum. he suggested it as a personal networking forum, hence "the Network".

i'd suggest grouping economics in with Politics & Philosophy. actually i kinda think Politics & Economics would go better together than Politics & Philosophy. i'd imagine any actual philosophy talk that occurs here would happen in the Books section.

I think it could be nice to basically apply our knowledge, resources and talents/skills to help each other and confer over the changes, etc. that are happening in our professional lives.

While there may be networking involved, I think it would also be cool to discuss our personal business philosophies and anything else related to the world of business.

to me discussing business from an abstract POV vs. networking and discussing our personal professional lives are pretty different topics, but i suppose its nbd how they're grouped on the forum.

I wasn't just talking about abstract discussion, but also news, insights, info, etc. However, there has been a ton of abstract discussion about business within our company that has lead to concrete directions. To me, they're directly related; the abstract is not only relevant, but necessary in order to gain perspective for wise business decisions.

    Well...

that's a pretty hasty generalization if you ask me.
