This article points out that our current antibiotics will be totally ineffective within the next 10 years due to the quick adaptability of microbes. The article is the typical doom and gloom you hear about all the time in the news, but it does make a relevant point.
The second we were able to destroy microbes with antibiotics, we essentially increased their evolution while simultaneously slowing our own. We have taken our evolution into our own hands and perhaps it is a logical progression of sentient races.
Our new focus should be genetic manipulation of microbes for our benefit. There are so many possibilities with these guys. I mean we already use yeast to make bread rise, ferment beer and wine and of course make cheese and fermented meats. Now we have to start using bacteriophages and other viruses to combat these multi-cillin resistant bastards. Once we can totally domestic the microbes, we will have some serious power.
